Meerkat App: What you Need to Know

the new Meerkat app

After  the SXSW conference in early March 2015, all anyone could talk about was Meerkat. What is Meerkat you ask? Let’s find out.

Meerkat is a new video app, much like a combination of Snapchat and Twitter. Like Snapchat, it sends a live video stream of what you are doing at any moment. When you start live-streaming, it sends out the link through your Twitter account. Unlike Snapchat stories, it is only available while you are live streaming. People from all over the world can watch you stream and ask you questions or type comments in real time. Celebrities have even started using it, including Jimmy Fallon. Below is a tutorial “how-to” video provided by Meerkat.

5 facts you need to know:

  • Streams will be pushed to followers via push notifications.
  • People can only watch it live.
  • They can “restream” (think retweet) any stream to their followers in real time
  • You can schedule streams so that users will be ready to watch.
  • You can watch on any computer, phone, or tablet.

is meerkat the next big thing? how long will this trend last? let us know your thoughts in the comments!

    Hey Grace,
So I read both of your posts on the apps Meerkat and Periscope and find this new technology to be just plain creepy. I read an article on how this app could be great for emergency services like firefighters and law enforcement, but it seems like a fad. To me, these apps are way to similar to Snapchat and just become another thing to take up space on one’s ios or android device. I do like that if I did want to use it, Periscope can connect to my twitter friends. I feel that apps like these are enabling people to become more and more disconnected from one another. If you can live stream a friend why would you need to text, call, or visit them anymore? Also, I hope there is some sort of privacy feature and minimum age requirement. Great analysis of both, it definitely got me interested in learning more about new apps.
