How to: Use Your Phone as a Scanner

Throughout my four years in college, I have learned some tricks of the trade; how to register for classes, the best time to get books, and how to use my phone as a scanner.  Ever needed to send a pdf of a document that needed to be signed, but didn’t have a way to scan it back? I’ve got the solution.

Scannable by Evernote
Price: FREE
Why It’s Awesome: Scannable is a quick and easy to use app that turns the overwhelming pile of paper into high quality PDF’s that can be saved and shared. The app automatically recognizes the business cards, receipts and any other paper you can imagine, and crops them.

For iPhone/iPad users, click here.

Scanner Pro

Price: On sale $2.99, Regular Price $4.99 // Also has a free version
Why It’s Awesome: First off, I got this app for free during a past Apple Store promotion during Christmas time. I prefer this one to Scannable because of one feature: folders. I am too OCD to have everything unorganized in a stream. Scanner Pro takes the extra step and let’s users make multiple folders to organize all the PDF’s in the app.

For iPhone/iPad Users, click here. For the free version, click here.

Because both of these apps are for Apple products only, I wanted to include a option for android users. I can not review it because I do not have any android devices, but here is a free version you can download!

Snapchat Update: Best Friend Emojis

When rolling out the Discover option, many were disappointed that the best friends feature had been disabled. Snapchat employees swore that it would be back, and fans finally got what they wanted…sorta.

Introducing Friend Emojis

Instead of being able to see someone’s best friend, Snapchat created a more private way to see who you are closest too, and how they feel about you. According to techcrunch.com, here is a directory of what the different emojis mean:

  • 💛- Gold Heart – You’re #1 Best Friends – The person you send snaps to most sends snaps to you most too
  • 😬- Grimace/Grit Teeth – You Have A Mutual #1 Best Friend – The person you send snaps to most is also who this person sends snaps to most
  • 😊– Smile – One Of Your Best Friends – This is one of the people you send snaps to most
  • 😎- Sunglasses – You Have A Mutual Best Friend – One of the people you send snaps to most is also one of the people this person sends snaps to most
  • 😏- Smirk – You’re Their Best Friend But They’re Not Yours – You’re one of the people they send snaps to most, but they’re not one of the people you send snaps to most
  • 🔥- Fire – You Two Are On A Snapstreak – You and this person have sent snaps back and forth for the number of consecutive days shown

Snapchat decided to hide this update, and say in the description it was just “bug fixes and improvements to make Snapchat faster”. Snapchat hid the directions to use these emojis in their Discover Channel.

Emojis were not the only thing added. The update also contained a low-light camera option in the shape of the moon. When turning it on, it automatically brighten what you are looking at, making it perfect for snapchats at night.

Why do some people need love?

snapchat update needs love

You may have noticed a section under your list of  “recents” called “Needs Love”. Snapchat is now reminding you to send snaps to people you haven’t in a while. It does not mean that they aren’t getting any “snap love”, just not from you.

Below are some screenshots from the update:

Why I Made the Switch to Sunrise Calendar

My Agenda: The one thing I carry around everywhere that keeps my life consistent and my sanity in tack. I felt the need to write everything on my iPhone’s calendar, except for the fact that I hated it. My boss at my internship told me about this cool app called “Sunrise” and told me it was perfect for type-a people like myself. I downloaded it and never looked back.

When I downloaded the app for the first time, it was only available on  iTunes. Today, Sunrise can be accessed on the web or downloaded for every device you own, including android!

The app supports Google Calender, the Exchange and iCloud. It also can be integrated with Facebook events, Google Maps (for location), and Linked In contacts. They also have app additions that are in the app already including a to-do list service called Basecamp and a meeting schedule tool called Meetup.

A Look Into The Style of Sunrise Calendar

Twitter Launches “Periscope”

IMG SOURCE: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id972909677

Download Periscope: App Store Only

Twitter just debuted their new app, Periscope, which is very similar to the popular Meerkat that I touched on last week.  #livestream trend anyone?

What You Need To Know

  • Who created it? Twitter bought it from a small company; its been in Beta Mode but was just released to the public Thursday, March 26.
  • What do you do? It has the same function as Meerkat. The main difference is that it is fully integrated with your Twitter.  When first downloading, you have to sign in with your Twitter account information. Then you select some of your (twitter) followers and get push notifications when any of your favorites start a live-stream. On the main page, you can also watch random streams from people all over the world, and it automatically refreshes!
  • What is the purpose? It gives people a look into what you are doing at that exact time. I could watch someone in France climb the Eiffel Tour, all from the comfort of my own bed.
  • Who is using it? Anyone who is anyone. News anchor, celebrities, even normal, everyday people have gotten hit by the live stream bug.
  • What does a stream look like? I personally haven’t tested the stream option (still a bit creeped out by it). While watching someone else stream though, it shows a map of where the broadcaster is from, the title and name of the person broadcasting, and a chat like feature which lets viewers comment while watching and broadcasters respond while streaming.

Here are some screenshots of the app so you can get the feel of it!

what do you think about live-streaming? will it be a fad or become the next instagram?

meerkat or periscope? Which do you prefer?

Meerkat App: What you Need to Know

the new Meerkat app

After  the SXSW conference in early March 2015, all anyone could talk about was Meerkat. What is Meerkat you ask? Let’s find out.

Meerkat is a new video app, much like a combination of Snapchat and Twitter. Like Snapchat, it sends a live video stream of what you are doing at any moment. When you start live-streaming, it sends out the link through your Twitter account. Unlike Snapchat stories, it is only available while you are live streaming. People from all over the world can watch you stream and ask you questions or type comments in real time. Celebrities have even started using it, including Jimmy Fallon. Below is a tutorial “how-to” video provided by Meerkat.

5 facts you need to know:

  • Streams will be pushed to followers via push notifications.
  • People can only watch it live.
  • They can “restream” (think retweet) any stream to their followers in real time
  • You can schedule streams so that users will be ready to watch.
  • You can watch on any computer, phone, or tablet.
